Kick-Off for 2011 –

A commitment to Lean by leading companies in our local community

Abstract:

“Have you  been asked to define Lean and you were at a loss for words?”  On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, 1:00 pm -6:00 pm, join us for an afternoon of learning and networking.  The meeting’s agenda includes 1) A Lean Lesson. 2)  Teams will compete against one another, as they play the “Airplane Game.”  In doing so, we will explore the following questions: What is Lean?, What is Pull?, What is “Flow”?

A panel discussion will follow by Turner Construction, DPR Construction, Tellepsen, Linbeck, and BNIM.  Representatives will discuss and explore their company’s Lean journey, how the companies began the Lean journey, where they are today and how does their company sustain the lean journey within their organizations.  Also, our meeting will include a presentation of the Core Planning Group's Vision for the LCI Houston Chapter, the proposed 2011 meeting calendar and how everyone can get involved and participate to sustain our chapter activities.  Stay and network with the group after the meeting is over.

Panel of Speakers:

Phil Maquire, Senior Superintendent, DPR Construction.  Phil's first intro to Lean was on a Sutter Health project in CA in 2005.  He has been involved in Lean initiatives (Last Planner training, etc.)within DPR since then.

Mike Shook, Federal Work Construction Executive, Turner Construction.  Mike has worked with Turner Construction Company for the past 28 years, with over years of experience in the construction related industry.  Mike’s experience with Lean includes serving as Lean Business Unit Champion and responsible for large project within the Business Unit that initiated extensive use of BIM for estimating, detailed MEP coordination and pushed the limits of prefabrication of MEP elements and visualization of construction. Also he initiated use of Last Planner Schedule coordination that is now being used on more of our local projects.  Mike chairs the Business Unit committee that individually focuses and enables the use of other Lean Tools and initiatives.

Jeff Johnston, Project Controls/ Scheduling Manager, Tellesepen Builders.  Jeff has been with Tellepsen for 6 years and has 13 years in the construction-related  industry.  His Lean experience includes about 5 years of experience with LEAN methodology, and has spent the past 4 years incorporating several aspects of Lean into the Tellepsen Culture.

Emre Ozcan, Vice President, Client Executive, Linbeck.  Emre’s project experience includes U.S. and international clients.  Furthermore, he has earned an MBA from Boston College and a Master in Construction Management from Northeastern University in Boston.  His Lean experience includes implementing Last Planner™. He currently leads Linbeck’s “Lean Leaders” program for the Houston office.

LCI Houston Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Houston Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the Houston area.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in the Houston area.

We are dedicated to exploring the three opportunities provided by Lean Project Delivery (LPD):

-Impeccable coordination to create predictable work flow

-Projects as a production system to change the structure of work in design and construction.

-Project as a collective enterprise to align financial incentives.
